Having grown up in a regal city with his scientist father Balthier was then named Ffamran. Once his relationship with his father deteriorated, Ffamran changed his name to Balthier and became a delinquent. On his final adventure as a free man, Balthier and Fran broke into a warehouse in order to steal the things in storage. They were interupted by two men and Balthier forced Fran, who was terminally ill at the time, to take the loot and leave, assuring her he'd meet her later at his aircraft, The Strahl. When alone with the two men he shot them both, only intent on injuring them, but killing them both.
